What is the significance of George Milton's surname in the book 'Of Mice and Men' by John Steinbeck?

Steinbeck was greatly inspired by the works of the English Poet, John Milton. Milton wrote poems, notably, Paradise Lost, Paradise Regained and Samson.

George, as a name, means farmer in Greek; I'd say the given name seems truer to his relevance in the story. What is the significance of George Milton's surname in the book 'Of Mice and Men' by John Steinbeck?
Milton...that's the name of a very famous poet...isn't George Milton a deep kinda character...?? if not...then it's probably meant to be ironic...
