I found a really awesome looking bistro in a yahoo news article a little while ago about really fancy chocolates and I can't find it ANYWHERE... I thought I had it bookmarked but I honestly CANNOT find it. The bistro had 3 locations I think and it sold chocolate obviously but also sandwiches and soups and... and... I think it had a location it was building in Williamstown, MA and one in a NH town near VT. How was the migrating in the book of mice and men different from now?
George and Lennie moved from place to place by hitch hiking, walking, and illegally riding freight trains. Their migrant worker lifestyle was facilitated by an agricultural system which catered to groups of unattached men, willing to live cheaply and simply in bunk houses, and eat camp food. Wages were typically paid in cash, and little or no identification or personal history was expected by employers, or offered by the migrant workers.
Today, most employers are required to check identification such as I9 forms, passports, Social Security records, and sometimes health information. Pay is often by direct deposit to bank accounts, which require photo identification, and credit checks. Few employers provide housing, because of the obligations that creates for them under later health and welfare provisions. Ugh...how to get rid of too-smart mice?
So as I sit here typing this, this little mouse is periodically coming out and walking around under the coffee table and by my TV. The stupid thing is too smart for the glue traps, which were working really well for me before... he's completely going around them. I've been watching.
I thought I'd gotten rid of the mice! I have a couple of snap traps, but last time I used them, the stupid things ate all the peanut butter off without setting them off.
I just want them OUT of my apartment. They are disgusting, and I do NOT appreciate their little ';gifts'; on my carpet...not to mention my kitchen countertops.
Any suggestions? I really don't want to spray poison in my home, and I don't want to poison them and have them die in my walls....I just want them OUT...
Are those things that emit high-pitched sounds good? Would I need one in each room in my apartment to keep them out?

I don't know where you live, but if they got in, they can get out.
Make sure the only water they can get to, is out of your house. Then place some crushed Alka Selzer in small bowls where they can get to it.
Add some flavoring, preferably a dry type. And let them eat.
Mice can not pass gas.
They become dry and fill the need for water, when they drink, well, they won't be bothering you anymore.Ugh...how to get rid of too-smart mice?

If that doesn't work, get a cat!
The high pitched things work for me, but not everyone. Good luck getting rid of the little smart thing.
ive used a small piece of bacon or ham tied onto the tab of a mouse trap with a piece of dental floss.

Actually cats usually create more of a mouse problem then they correct by the mice eating at unattended food bowls and also eating cat feces. Once you have a mouse infestation it is too late to get rid of any food items in hopes the mouse will leave, however you need to get rid of any food items that a mouse can get to (this includes any food in a cardboard container as mice can chew through these.) Make sure that your refrigerator is sealed, the common mouse can fit through an opening the diameter of a #2 pencil so many times i see them going in and out of refrigerators with people completely shocked that the mouse is doing so. Also you need to remove any clutter and search for mice nests (these will be in out of the way places by walls and made of shredded paper.) You next need to catch and kill the mouse (one female mouse can have 10 litters of 5-7 mice a year resulting in a mean offspring production of 62 mice a year, letting just one mouse escape can lead to thousands of mice and a huge infestation in a very short period of time.) Since it sounds like you live in the sticks you have only 2 options, one (which i definitely recommend you try 1st) is to put together a bucket trap http://www.kountrylife.com/content/gal10鈥?/a> (these is so easy to do even school children can do it) the second method is making your own grain poison, and you can google and find many recipes for this, however it is very dangerous if you have any kids, pets, and also outside wildlife such as birds and foraging animals may be killed from it.

What does ob/ob mean when talking about mice?
The OB/OB mouse is a mouse that lacks the gene to make leptin. As you may know, leptin is a protein secreted by fat cells that is anorexigenic (tells you to stop eating). So mice lacking the ability to make leptin become obese because they seem to be lacking the signal that tells them not to eat. Interestingly, if OB/OB mice are given leptin, they lose weight. This started a huge interest in leptin as a potential weight-loss drug, with the rationale that maybe we could just give obese folks leptin, and this would cause them to stop eating and lose weight.

Does all psychiatric/biological research involve experimenting on mice?
i'm trying to decide whether to go for an md/PhD program but I cannot imagine working in a lab full of mice even for medical endeavors. i don't have a problem with potentially messy human things, just rodents.Does all psychiatric/biological research involve experimenting on mice?

I'm assuming that's not what you want either. I cannot speak to the clinical M.D. side, but on the research Ph.D. side, rodents are extremely helpful tools. Sure, you can do some useful non-invasive or minimally-invasive experiments with human volunteer subjects. But some important research is necessarily life-threatening to the subject, and those experiments just can't be done on humans for obvious reasons. You need animal models: mammals that are easy to work with and biologically similar to humans. Mice and rats are often the solution to that problem.
